Ground cover: easy, spreading, evergreen glossy kidney-shaped leaves. Just pop it in and let it go! It does flower, but you have to get on hands and knees to see them, so best thought of as just ground cover.

Grower Notes

Hardy Perennial. Tolerates part sun, but shade preferred, will flourish in deep shade, needs fairly moist soil. Excellent in woodland beds, forms thick mat of foliage.

Asarum europaeum (Asarabacca). This species has glossy deep green kidney-shaped leaves with dull 3-lobed flowers that hang close to the ground. It is widespread in Britain but quite rare. This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: 5-10cm long, creeping, rooting ROOT: Branched, creeping stock HAIRS: Short hairs on stems and flowers STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Longer than blade BRACTS: Absent FLOWER STALK: Longer than flower PETALS: 3, triangular, equal, pointed, joined into a perianth or short tube. STAMENS: 12 STIGMA: Usually 6 OVARY: 1, usually 6-celled SEEDS: Numerous, 2-3mm, flattened.


They are fully hardy and will prefer to be grown in shade with humus-rich moist but well drained soil.
