Common names

Maule's quince


Chaenomeles japonica (Maule's quince). A low-spreading, climbing or wall, deciduous shrub native to Japan. Glossy mid green leaves are obovate to round turning yellow in autumn. Clusters of orange red purple flowers bloom from spring and are followed by fragrant, small, round yellow fruit.


They are fully hardy and will prefer a sunny position and well drained soil. On wall-trained shrubs cut back side-shoots after flowering to 2 or 3 buds and shorten shoots growing away from wall during growing season.

Interest and use

Banks, hedging, specimen. Spring interest. Attracts humming birds in suitable geographical locations.
