A sturdy deciduous tree, Carpinus betulus is very hardy with deeply veined green leaves which turn an attractive yellow in autumn before falling. Although they an attractive specimen tree, it is more often used to create thick, dense hedges. A good plant for providing a habitat for wildlife.

Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam). This is an attractive elm-like deciduous tree, which is native to Europe and Asia. The leaves are alternate and ovate rounded and dark green. In the autumn it will bear striking, yellow-orange long-lasting foliage, the fruit that appear are nut like. They will tolerate urban conditions.
They are fully hardy and will need sun or semi-shade in fertile well drained soil.
