Plant Finder: about the Salix genus

Common names

Willow, Osier, Sallow

Salix genus (Willow). This genus consists of about 300 species of deciduous trees, shrubs and subshrubs. They are fast-growing but relatively short-lived trees, with bright green, lance-shaped and narrow leaves. The flowers are borne in fluffy catkins.

They will require cool, moist soil with sun or partial-shade. These frost-hardy plants do best in areas with clearly defined seasons. Plants grown for their colourful winter shoots should be cut back hard in early spring, every 1-3 years.

Interest and use

Grown for their habit, foliage, catkins and, in some cases, colourful winter shoots. Suitable for coastal conditions. Attracts butterflies
