Native to Szechuan province in China, Abelia engleriana is a semi-evergreen shrub with lightly scented, purple-pink, bell-shaped flowers in mid summer. These flowers have an eye-catching golden-orange throat.

The flowers appear on arching branches which are covered with bright green leaves. An ideal choice of shrub for a warm and sunny garden.

Grower Notes

Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Abelia englerianarequires shelter from cold winter winds.

Pruning To reduce size and encourage flowering, trim back by one third after flowering or in the spring.
Notes: Abelia engleriana is semi-evergreen and may keep its leaves throughout mild winters. In colder winters the leaves will fall.

Description

Abelia engleriana. This species of Abelia has delicate pale pink flowers with a darker pink flush around the stamens, as well as yellow markings towards the edge of the lower three petals.

Cultivation

Abelia shrubs are fully to half hardy, but in cold areas do best against a south or west facing wall. They require a sheltered, sunny position and fertile well drained soil. Remove dead wood in late spring and prune out older branches after flowering to restrict growth if required. Need staking.
