Native to China and a rare small tree in the UK, Acer henryi has dark green, trifoliate leaves (leaves composed of three leaflets, each up to 10 cm long) with handsome red orange or yellow autumn colour.

Generally branching and naturally multi-stemmed once established, Acer henryi is best planted in a position with some shelter from strong winds and sun or light, dappled shade.

Common names



Acer henryi (Maple). This species is a spreading deciduous tree. The leaves are bronze when young and will turn orange-red in the autumn.This small tree has leaves divided into three leaflets that unfurl bronze at first, then turn dark green and finally orange and brilliant red in autumn. Green flowers are produced in slender, pendant racemes.


Acers are fully to frost hardy and will require sun or semi-shade in fertile, well-drained soil.
