Plant Finder: about Acanthus spinosus

Common names

Spiny Bear's Breaches, Armed Bear's Breaches

Acanthus spinosus (Spiny Bear's Breaches). This species of Acanthus has large deeply divided, glossy, spiny, dark green leaves. In early summer to early autumn, tubular, white and purple flower spikes, up to 1.2m high are borne.

Protect crowns in first winter after planting. Long, thong-like roots make plants difficult to eradicate if wrongly placed. Keep watered in dry periods.

Interest and use

Borders, bedding plants, ground cover. Summer interest.
