Acer palmatum (Japanese maple). This tree grows in different forms, from a low mound to a broad round-headed tree. In the autumn the leaves will turn a brilliant red, orange or yellow; they are 5 to 10cms long and may have 5 to 10 lobes. This species is resistant to oak-root fungus. Pruning is not really needed because of its natural branching growth pattern. It can be grown as a mound or even planted in a container.
It will prefer warmer climates than most other maples. It will need shade and shelter or the leaves may shrivel.
Ornamental, foliage, specimen with good autumn colour.
