Description: This beautiful bamboo is native to China and Japan, known for its edible shoots and large culms (canes). Hardy down to -10C and will tolerate medium winds, this bamboo will spread over time but will happily grow in a pot and eventually form culms (canes) in 40cm in diameter. Max hight and spread takes around 40 years.

Madake, Giant timber bamboo, Ku-chiku, Bamboo
Phyllostachys genus (Madake). There are about 80 species of medium and large growing bamboos which are evergreen, the plants have spreading rhizomes. The leaves are lance-shaped with cross veins that give a tessellated appearance. The flowers are produced at varying intervals but are not decorative.
They will thrive in a sheltered position that is not too dry.
Used for hedging as well as for ornamentation. The woody stems can have many uses.
