Camellia japonica 'Desire' is a lovely medium sized evergreen shrub with pale pink to white, formal, semi-double flowers in spring. These flowers are eye catching and contrast very well with the lush, dark green leaves.

Camellia japonica 'Desire' is an excellent flowering shrub for a position in sun or light, dappled shade.

Grower Notes

Position: Full sun or shade (avoid east facing areas)
Soil: Neutral or preferably acid soil. In chalky areas, Camellia japonica 'Desire' can be grown in a large container with ericaceous compost.
Hardiness: Hardy.
Flowering Period: Feb - April.
Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
Habit: Medium sized shrub.
Height: 2 m (6 ft)
Spread: 1.5 m (5 ft)

Pruning: Prune Camellia japonica 'Desire' to shape if required after flowering but before new growth begins in spring.

Camellia japonica ‘Desire’. This Camellia has formal, semi-double blooms in pale blush pink, with slightly darker pink edges.


Protect from cold, dry winds and early morning sun to prevent damage to the emerging buds and flowers. Prefers lime-free soil, so best container-grown in alkaline soils.

Interest and use

As a wall shrub, a specimen or container plant and to provide structure in winter. Apart from the ornamental flowers, the glossy, dark evergreen leaves are a good backdrop for colourful planting.
