Cercis occidentalis is a fantastic large shrub or very small tree native to the South-west US, with clusters of showy, bright pink or magenta coloured flowers covering the branches in spring. The leaves are heart-shaped and dark green.

A drought tolerant and sun-loving garden plant, it is ideal for a hot, sunny garden border!

Soil: Well-drained soil. Cercis occidentalis dislikes very wet or poorly drained soils.
Hardiness: Hardy.
Flowering Period: April - May.

Habit: Cercis occidentalis grows to be a large shrub or very small tree with a branching habit.

Notes: Cercis occidentalis does not transplant well and should be left undisturbed once planted in position. Do not feed this Cercis with artificial plant food after planting it out, this can severely damage the root system.

Cercis occidentalis (Western redbud). An upright shrubby spreading deciduous tree or shrub native to California and Arizona. Blue green leaves, kidney-shaped become yellow red in the autumn. It will bear profuse pink blooms in the early spring and attractive seed pods.


Full sun is essential for good growth and flower production.
