A comparatively low-growing shrub, Chaenomeles japonica 'Sargentii' has masses of vibrant red-pink to orange flowers in spring. These flowers are followed by small green or yellow fruit later in the summer. The leaves are dark green, sometimes turning shades of yellow or bronze before they fall.

This shrub tolerates shade but flowers best in a warm sunny position.

Chaenomeles japonica ‘Sargentii’ (Ornamental Quince). This Chaenomeles produces masses of vibrant red-pink flowers that turn to orange. The dark green leaves turn shades of yellow and bronze in the autumn and the plant also produces small green to yellow edible fruit that can be made into jam. It likes a sunny spot but can tolerate shade. This plant is included on the RHS 'perfect for pollinators' list, as well as their 'Plants for bats' list.


Prefers a sunny, sheltered spot. Remove unwanted suckers.

Interest and use

Often planted against walls for early spring flowers and attractive, edible fruit. Attracts bees and moths, which attract bats.
