An exciting and unusual Japanese shrub, Chaenomeles x 'Toyo-Nishiki' has both lovely white and pale pink flowers in spring all on the same plant. Chaenomeles are prized in Japan for its fine flowers, the jam making quality of the fruits and for use as a bonsai.

The leaves are dark green and when not in flower this plant makes a good backdrop for smaller flowering plants.

Description

Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Toyo-Nishiki’ (Flowering Quince). This Chaenomeles is popular in Japan, where it is often used for creating Bonsai. The flowers open as red and create a wonderful display as they gradually age through pink, to white, on the same branch. Leaves are dark green, turning yellow to bronze before dropping. The edible, apple-like fruit becomes yellow and fragrant as it ripens.

Cultivation

Best planted in a sunny, sheltered position. Bring branches with swollen flower buds indoors to force the blooms for cut flowers. Watch out for thorns!

Interest and use

Grown for flowers and Bonsai. Excellent for cut flowers.
