Native to South-eastern North America, Cladrastis lutea (or kentukea) has lovely wisteria-like white, fragrant flowers, touched with yellow at the center in early summer. The pinnate (feather-like) leaves are pale green in spring and summer, turning warm, butter yellow in autumn before falling.

Cladrastis lutea is an unusual and handsome tree best suited for a sunny position.

Position: Full sun.
Soil: Fertile, well-drained soils. Tolerant of dry soil conditions.
Hardiness: Hardy. This plant will grow best in an area sheltered from strong winds and late frosts, as these can damage the emerging flower buds.
Flowering Period: June.

Habit: Small tree with an upright; graceful spreading crown once established.

Description

Cladrastis lutea (Yellow wood). This is a very hardy beautiful spreading, deciduous tree. The leaves are green and veined; they are obovate to ovate. The flowers are decorative and fragrant, the blooms are white, yellow, green, pink and will appear in mid spring to early summer.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy and will require full sun with fertile well drained soil.

Interest and use

Specimen with good autumn colour.
