Clerodendrum bungei

For sale by Bluebell Nursery

This grower is sure of this plant identification.

A native to China, Clerodendrum bungei is still a UK rarity, but is one of the finest, most reliable late flowering shrubs, with huge corymbs (flat topped clusters) of rose-red, fragrant flowers from August till late October.

The plant has large, deep green leaves with a faint fragrance some find very pleasant, like peanut butter, while others smell drains. A handsome, colourful garden plant!

Supplied Size: 3L container (30-40cm tall)

Common names

Glory flower

Description

Clerodendrum bungei (Glory flower). An upright bushy deciduous suckering shrub native to China and the Himalayas. Leaves are heart-shaped and medium green, smelling rather unpleasant when crushed. The salverform flowers are borne in terminal panicles in shades of red, purple and pink and are pleasantly scented. It will reach 6 ft (1.8 m) unless cut to the ground each spring; new growths will then flower on 3 ft (1 m) stems. It will spread rapidly if not contained or controlled.

Cultivation

Thin out crowded growth in spring. Stems require support. They are fully hardy to frost tender, min 5C and will need humus-rich, well drained soil. Give them a position in full sun with partial shade in the summer. Make sure you water them freely in the growing season, and less at other times.
