This grower is sure of this plant identification.

An old variety, Corylus avellana ' Garibaldi' has attractive catkins, large leaves and is famous for good crops of long, thin shelled nuts. If planting this hazel as part of a 'nuttery', space out the hazelnut trees at 4 m (13 ft) apart.

Ideally, two or more different hazelnut cultivars should be planted near each other for better pollination and increased nut production.

Position: Full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Any fertile soil.
Hardiness: Hardy.
Flowering Period: January to March (Catkins).
Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
Habit: Corylus avellana ' Garibaldi' grows to be a large branching shrub.
Height: 3 m (10 ft) if left unpruned.
Spread: 3 m (10 ft) if left unpruned.
Pruning: Aim to keep Corylus avellana ' Garibaldi'l to a height of around 2 m (6 - 7 ft) by pruning the main leader to this height yearly. Prune in mid to late February.

Corylus maxima ‘Garibaldi’ (Filbert). C. maxima 'Garibaldi' is an old variety of filbert which produces crops of long, thin-shelled nuts. It makes an attractive, large-leaved, large spreading shrub.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy, and will prefer sunny positions or semi-shade, with fertile well drained soil. Cut out suckers as they arise.

Interest and use

Grown mainly for the nuts, if you can get there before the squirrels!
