This grower is sure of this plant identification.

A seedling from this Himalayan species originally raised at the St Monica convent in Bristol. Leaves are dark green in spring and summer, sometimes turning rich shades of purple in the autumn and winter, making a perfect foil for the clusters of dark red fruits.

A lovely and unusual, small evergreen tree with year round interest.

Description

Cotoneaster frigidus ‘Saint Monica’. This cotoneaster's semi-evergreen leaves are very large, up to 25cm in length. The red berries are borne in large drooping clusters and are particularly attractive to waxwings. The leaves sometimes flush shades of red or purple in autumn.
The largest on record is 10m 60cm x 10m 60cm with a trunk diameter of 38 cms.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy and will prefer full sun, but the evergreens will do well in either sun or semi-shade.

Interest and use

Grown for its evergreen foliage and red berries. Attractive to birds.
