A rare and semi-evergreen, Hydrangea-like shrub native to China and S.E. Asia, Dichroa febrifuga has dark blue flowers in summer followed by dark blue fruit later in autumn. The leaves are large and dark green.

Dichroa febrifuga requires a very warm, sheltered position in sun or light shade and grows to be a small garden shrub in the UK. The leaves can sometimes fall during cold winters.

Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
Soil: Moist yet well drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: Frost tender. Dichroa febrifuga REQUIRES significant winter protection and can suffer damage in severe cold. It can be grown successfully in a cold conservatory.
Flowering Period: July - August.

Dichroa febrifuga (Chinese quinine). It bears flattened clusters of starry blue flowers amidst glossy, deep green papery leaves in late spring. Flowers have five reflexed petals and prominent stamens, and open from round buds of pale blue. The blooms are more dark blue in acid soils; lilac to light blue in alkaline soils. Iridescent indigo-blue berries follow in autumn and remain on the shrub for many months.

The species is widespread over much of southeast Asia, but is rare in cultivation.

Ornamental attractive shrub, suitable for pots and tubs.
