This grower is sure of this plant identification.

Lovely cultivar first discovered growing in Western Tasmania in 1986, Eucryphia lucida 'Ballerina' has large (up to 3 cm across), pale pink flowers with eye-catching crimson stamen in late summer. These colourful flowers stand out well against the dark green, glossy leaves. An unusual and handsome, evergreen flowering tree!

Grower Notes

Position: Sheltered in full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Eucryphia lucida 'Ballerina' requires a warm position and shelter from cold winter winds.
Flowering Period: July - August.
Flower Colour: Pale pink
Rate of Growth: Moderate.
Habit: Eucryphia lucida 'Ballerina' eventually a small, densely branching tree although it can be pruned to grow with a more shrub-like habit if preferred.
Height: up to 8 m (26 ft).
Spread: 4 m (13 ft).
Notes: Prune to shape after flowering if required.

Eucryphia lucida ‘Ballerina’ (Leatherwood). An evergreen tree with fragrant large pale pink flowers with crimson stamens bourne over dark green, glossy, simple, oblong leaves. Leathery capsule-like fruit are produced in autumn.

Cultivation

This plant can be pruned as a large shrub.

Interest and use

Grown for its flowers and used by beekeepers in Tasmania, so a good plant for attracting bees.
