Euonymus alatus

A medium-sized shrub known for its superb red autumn colour, Euonymus alatus is slow growing and has distinctive corky 'wings' on its branchlets. Leaves are bright green and turn spectacular crimson-scarlet in autumn and can last on the plant for several weeks before falling.

Small numbers of vivid purplish-red fruit appear on the branches when mature.

Notes: Although Euonymus alatus does produce ornamental fruit, Euonymus phellomanus or Euonymus planipes are a much better choice if you prefer a plant with ornamental fruit, rather than autumn colour.

Euonymus alatus (Winged spindle tree). This is an ornamental garden plant, it is grown mainly for its foliage which will turn a brilliant red in the autumn. It has a bushy spreading habit which form a clump much wider than it is tall. This shrub will not bloom, but the flowers are inconspicuous and are followed in the autumn by reddish-purple fruits.


They prefer full sun and should grow well in any average garden soil.

Banks, specimen, ornamental bark, foliage, hedging, border, fruit. Suitable for coastal conditions.
