Not for the faint hearted! This large blue prickly pear cactus can reach 10 feet (3Ms) in height with pads nearly a foot (30cms) across. It is not hardy and needs protection from frost/winter wet or it will rot. Suitable for a (large!) cool green house/conservatory.
Opuntia robusta (Prickly pear). A shrubby perennial cactus with round to oval, blue green flattened segments. Yellow flowers are bowl-shaped appearing in late spring and summer followed by deep red smooth fruits.
They will thrive in hot, dry conditions in moderately fertile, gritty, humus-rich, well-drained soil with full sun. You can propagate from seed.
