Euonymus planipes is a native to Korea, N. Japan, and E. Siberia and has masses of bright purplish-scarlet fruit in autumn. These fruit weep gracefully from the branches and split open to reveal bright orange seed.

The large, lush green leaves have excellent autumn colour, turning deep red or plum purple before falling. The plant is also known for its long, pointed mahogany coloured spring buds.

Habit: Euonymus planipes grows to be a medium sized or eventually large, elegantly branching shrub.

Notes: The fruit are toxic and should not be eaten. This plant was formerly named Euonymus sachalinensis.

Description

Euonymus planipes. This is a large deciduous shrub or small tree which will grow about 3m or more high and wide. It will produce brilliant red autumn colours and quite large 4 to 5 lobed deep pink to scarlet fruits splitting to expose the orange-covered seeds.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy and will need sun or semi-shade in any well drained soil. If grown in full sun, soil for evergreen species should not be very dry.

Interest and use

Banks, hedging and specimen, with good autumn colour.
