A lovely selection, Fuchsia x bacillaris has fountains of tiny deep green leaves and a myriad of minute red-pink flowers for months and months through summer and early autumn. Although generally hardy, this beautiful small shrub needs a very warm site or winter protection.

Grower Notes

Position: Full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Fuchsia x bacillaris may suffer from some die back after exceptionally cold weather.
Flowering Period: June - September.

Description

Fuchsia × bacillaris. An upright and spreading shrub from Mexico. Bears lance-shaped to ovate, hairy leaves.

Cultivation

They are frost hardy to frost tender, min 5C, Most of the species will need a sheltered partially shaded position, with fertile moist but well drained soil. Prolonged low temperatures cause loss of top growth. If top growth dies in winter, cut back to ground level in spring. When grown as pot plants in a green house, fuchsias also need high-nitrogen feeds.

Interest and use

Grown for their flowers, usually borne from early summer to early autumn. The flowers are very attractive to bees. Suitable for coastal conditions. Attracts humming birds in suitable geographical locations.
