A densely branching evergreen shrub, Gaultheria shallon has dark green leathery leaves and racemes of colourful pinkish-white flowers in late spring/early summer. The flowers stand out well against the dark foliage and are followed by purple berries later in the year.

It requires an acid soil to grow well and appreciates shelter from cold winter winds. Excellent shrub for underplanting in woodlands.

Gaultheria shallon (Salal). This is a suckering shrub which will grow to 1.2m high and wide. In the spring it will produces terminal panicles of small, white lily-of-the-valley flowers. They are followed by 12mm fleshy purple fruit.


Provided soil is permanently moist, will tolerate sun.

Interest and use

Pink, mint-flavoured berries persist until spring.
