Plant Finder: about Ilex aquifolium ‘Myrtifolia’

Common names

Ilex aquifolium ‘Myrtifolia’ (Holly). This Holly is a male variety and so only very rarely produces the occasional berry. It has purple young shoots and narrow, spear-like, dark green glossy leaves with spines all along them.

Grow in sun or shade, but deciduous plants and those with variegated foliage do best in sun or semi-shade. Hollies dislike being transplanted, but respond well to hard pruning and pollarding, which should be carried out in late spring. Watch out for the spines.
