A fantastic holly for winter colour, Ilex x attenuata 'Sunny Foster' has young leaves which emerge as a handsome clear golden yellow in colour, while the more mature foliage is a darker gold or green. Small white flowers appear on the branches in early summer, followed by shiny, red fruit in winter. The leaf colour is most striking if planted in a very sunny spot!

Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Ilex x attenuata 'Sunny Foster' does not particularly enjoy chalky soils.

Habit: Ilex x attenuata 'Sunny Foster' grows to be a large, branching shrub with a pyramidal, upright form.

Notes: The leaf colour is most striking if planted in a very sunny spot. This holly which was first discovered as a variegated leaf mutation on a plant of Ilex x attenuata 'Foster No. 2' at the U.S. National Arboretum in North America.

Description

Ilex x attenuata ‘Sunny Foster’. This plant was spotted as a sport of Ilex x attenuata 'Foster No. 2' in the U.S. National Arboretum in 1964. The yellow colouring is in the upper third of the leaf blade and becomes more pronounced, deepening to golden yellow as the leaf matures. Inconspicuous white flowers are produced in May and shiny red berries appear in winter.

Plant this shrub in full sun for best foliage colour.

Used as a specimen shrub and for winter interest.
