A deciduous holly, Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman' is a sought after male form and the main pollinator for most female late flowering Ilex verticillata cultivars, including 'Winter Red' and 'Winter Gold'. This has dark green leaves and masses of small, white flowers in early summer.

A single 'Southern Gentleman' will pollinate several surrounding female Ilex verticillata.
