Late flowering female cultivar, Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' has dark green leaves and masses of vivid red berries in autumn popular with birds. Initially, the colourful fruit stand out well against the green foliage and then stay on the branches as the leaves fall.

Mix several red and yellow female hollies with a single male for a fantastic, colour autumn display.

Description

Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Red’ (Winterberry 'Winter Red'). This winterberry has masses of bright red berries produced in late autumn, which are retained on the tree in winter. Glossy dark green leaves turn yellow in the autumn before dropping. Inconspicuous white flowers are produced in May.

Cultivation

These plants prefer acid soils and need to be planted near a male Ilex verticillata to produce fruit.

Interest and use

Foliage interest in summer and autumn. Striking red berries in winter. Can be used for hedging and planted in borders with moist soil eg) near streams.
