Ethiopian Black Banana, Abyssinian Banana
Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ (Ethiopian Black Banana). This is a plant grown in temperate climates as an ornamental, however, the roots and centres of the tree are used in Africa as a staple food. The leaves have central purple veins and are large and paddle-shaped, much like a banana plant, and they turn purple as they mature.
This plant needs winter protection and planting in a protected position in the garden.
Ornamental foliage, also grown as a food crop and used for fibre and feeding livestock in Africa.
