Plant Finder: about Geranium macrorrhizum

Common names

Balkan cranesbill, Bigroot geranium, Rock cranesbill

Geranium macrorrhizum (Balkan cranesbill). This species will form a dense ground covering. The roots are fleshy and will spread well in full sun or partial shade. This species will produce soft pink flowers and glossy light green leaves. You can propagate, by division the rootstock or using the stem-bearing rosettes as cuttings. If you propagate by seeds remember that the seeds will need light for germination.

They are fully to half hardy. Most species will prefer sun, but some do better in the shade. They will grow in any but waterlogged soil. Outdoors, grow larger species and hybrids in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Grow small species and hybrids in humus-rich, sharply drained soil in full sun. Under glass, grow half hardy species in loam-based potting compost with added sharp sand, in bright filtered light. During the growing season, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly. Water sparingly in winter.
