Valeriana officinalis (Valerian). This is a scented herb, and is grown for its fragrant flowers and leaves. The roots have medicinal properties, which have been used as a sedative. The flowers range in colour from white, pale pink to lavender which appear in the summer. This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Upright, rarely short, creeping stems at base. ROOT: Short underground stem. HAIRS: Mostly below, absent above. STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Shorter than blade, upper almost absent. BRACTS: Shorter than flower. FLOWER STALK: More or less absent. SEPALS: 15 lobes rolled inwards, enlarging, becoming feathery in fruit. PETALS: 5, bases form tube, side swollen, lobes oblong. STAMENS: 3, protruding, white. STIGMA: 1, 3-lobed, style long. OVARY: 1, apparently 1-celled. SEEDS: 1, not released.


They are very frost hardy, and will thrive in almost any soil, in sun or partial-shade. You can propagate from seed or by division..
