This grower is sure of this plant identification.

Rare even in its native South Carolina habitat, Magnolia macrophylla has the largest leaves of any Magnolia, up to 1m long, green above and silvery-grey beneath. Established plants, have huge, fragrant, creamy-white flowers up to 30+ cm in diameter.

With such bold foliage it must be grown out of the wind in a sheltered situation and is susceptible to spring frosts until mature.

Grower Notes

Position: Full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Well drained, lime free, fertile soil.
Hardiness: reasonably hardy. Magnolia macrophylla requires a warm, sheltered position to establish well.

Habit: Effectively a shrub for many years, Magnolia macrophylla eventually grows to be a small, rounded tree.

Magnolia macrophylla (Umbrella tree). This is a deciduous species which grows about 5m tall, the tree has a broad, columnar shape. The leaves are thin and oval, The flowers are large, fragrant and cup-shaped, creamy white to yellowish blooms they will appear with the leaves in mid-summer.


They will require deep, fertile, well-drained mildly acidic soil. They thrive in sun or partial-shade but need protection from strong or salty winds. You can propagate from cuttings in summer or seed in autumn, or by grafting in winter.
