Plant Finder: about the Sempervivum genus

Common names

Houseleek, Thunder plant

Description

Sempervivum genus (Houseleek). These are evergreen perennials, which are grown for their symmetrical rosettes of oval to strap-shaped, pointed fleshy leaves. The flowers are star-shaped with 8-16 spreading petals.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy and you can plant in full sun in a gravelly very well-drained soil. They take several years to reach flowering size. Rosettes die after flowering but leave numerous offsets.

Interest and use

Grown for its leaves and flowers. Makes ground covering mats, suitable for rock gardens, screens, walls, banks and alpine houses.
