Common names

Angels' fishing rods


Dierama pulcherrimum (Angels' fishing rods). An upright South African summer-flowering corm. Bears evergreen, strap-like foliage. Arching stems bear long tassels of tubular or bell-shaped deep pink, red or purple-white flowers. ‘Album’ has white flowers. It reaches about 2m in height.


They are frost to half hardy, and will prefer a warm, sheltered or sunny site with well drained soil that should be kept moist in the summer when in growth. Dies down partially in winter.

Interest and use

Rock garden, wall or trellis. Suitable for coastal conditions.
