An unusual Magnolia in the UK native to the southeastern United States, Magnolia tripetala has creamy white flowers in May - June, which emerge after the leaves. Colourful rosy-red fruit cones appear after the flowers in late summer/early autumn.

Magnolia tripetala is a hardy large shrub or eventually small tree with eye-catching flowers.

Description

Magnolia tripetala (Umbrella tree). A broadly conical deciduous tree from Eastern USA. Bears dark green, lance-shaped to ovate leaves and cream white flowers cup-shaped flowers in spring. Needs protection from strong or salty winds.

Cultivation

They will require deep, fertile, well-drained mildly acidic soil. They thrive in sun or partial-shade but need protection from strong or salty winds. You can propagate from cuttings in summer or seed in autumn, or by grafting in winter.
