A beautiful small tree from E. Asia and Japan, Malus tschonoskii has a distinctive, columnar habit and delightful, white-tinged pink flowers in May followed by yellow-red fruit with a slightly acid flavour in autumn.

One of the finest Crab Apples, with leaves which emerge a lovely silvery-grey, darken to lush green then turn shades of orange, purple, scarlet and yellow in autumn.

Malus tschonoskii (Pillar apple). This is a fast growing, upright conical tree, It produces flowers which are white with a pink flush they are followed by yellowish green fruit with a red tinge. The foliage is mid-green and large, about 12cm long.


They will prefer a cool, moist climate with full sun with fertile, well-drained, loamy soil, you must protect from strong winds. You can propagate by budding in summer or grafting in winter.
