A rare native of China known for its superb autumn colour, Nyssa sinensis is a lovely small tree with large (up to 15 cm long), narrowly ovate leaves. These emerge a bronze colour in spring, change to dark green in summer, then turn startling shades of yellow, orange or red before falling in autumn.

Soil: Moist or well drained, fertile soil. Nyssa sinensis requires a reasonably acid soil to produce its most vivid autumn colour and grow well.

Description

Nyssa sinensis (Chinese tupelo). This is a small growing species, it has a spreading habit with narrowly oval pointed leaves. The spring foliage is tinged red and in autumn the leaves turn brilliant red and yellow.

Cultivation

They will need fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral to acidic soil with sun or partial-shade and a cool climate. You can propagate from cuttings in the summer or from seed in autumn.
