A US native, Oxydendron arboreum is a small tree with dark green leaves that turn fantastic shades of crimson, orange and yellow in autumn. These last longest on trees with shelter from October gales.

Established trees have white, urn-shaped, fragrant summer flowers that stand out well against the darker leaves. Unusual in the UK, it is lovely as a standalone specimen or in a woodland garden.

Grower Notes

Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
Soil: Moist yet well drained, acid soil. Oxydendron arboreum will grow best in a soil with a pH of between 4 and 6.
Hardiness: Hardy. Oxydendron arboreum appreciates shelter from cold winter winds.
Flowering Period: July - September.
Rate of Growth: Moderate.
Habit: Elegant, small branching tree.
Height: 8 m (26 ft) / [up to 4 m (13 ft) after 10 years]
Spread: 6 m (20 ft) / [up to 2.5 m (8 ft) after 10 years]

Notes: Oxydendron arboreum will usually not grow well in gardens with neutral or alkali soils.

Description

Oxydendrum arboreum (Sourwood). This is a great tree for all seasons; the peach-like leaves are copper tinted in early spring and bright green in the summer and then orange and red in the autumn. The flowers are white and bell-shaped and hang in clusters in late summer. The clusters will become green seed capsules.

Cultivation

They will need to be planted in an open position in sun or partial-shade in moist, acidic soil.

Ornamental foliage in autumn. Summer interest.
