This grower is sure of this plant identification.

A handsome cherry with lovely spring flowers, autumn colour and a slender, upright habit when young; more vase shape when established. In spring Prunus x hillieri 'Spire' has soft pink, single flowers as the bronze, young leaves emerge. These turn cool green in summer and gain red and bronze tints in a good crisp autumn. The tree also develops an attractive mahogany bark.

Common names



Prunus × hillieri ‘Spire’ (Cherry). A deciduous, upright tree which is conical when young. In early spring to mid spring, a mass of pale pink flowers are borne. Leaves which are bronze when young, turn dark green, then bright orange-red in autumn.


You should plant in moist, well-drained soil in full sun, remember to protection from strong winds. Propagation is from grafting or from seeds.

Interest and use

They are grown mainly for their single, 5 petalled, to double flowers and autumn colour. Suitable for coastal conditions.
