This grower is sure of this plant identification.

A spectacular small tree, Prunus x 'Shirotae' has distinctive, spreading horizontal branches, some eventually arching to the ground, festooned with slightly fragrant, semi-double, large white flowers in early spring. Leaves are bright green, turning bronze yellow or orange before falling in autumn.

An elegant tree, wonderful to behold in April in full flower!

Description

Prunus ‘Shirotae’ (Cherry ornamental). Also known as P. 'Hosokawa' and P. 'Mount Fuji'. A spreading, deciduous tree with elliptical leaves which are pale green when young, turning to dark green, then orange-red in autumn, borne on arching branches. Cup-shaped, semi-double, fragrant, white flowers appear in clusters in mid spring.

Cultivation

You should plant in moist, well-drained soil in full sun, remember to protection from strong winds. Trim deciduous hedges after flowering, evergreen ones in early or mid-spring.

Interest and use

They are grown mainly for their single, 5 petalled, to double flowers and autumn colour. Suitable for coastal conditions.
