This grower is sure of this plant identification.

A handsome native to N. Iran, where it can be found growing by the great rivers flowing into the Caspian Sea. Pterocarya fraxinifolia is a large, spreading tree with masses of pendulous green catkins, up to 60 cm long, in midsummer.

The pinnate (feather-like), lush green leaves which often grow to 40 - 60 cm long and turn butter-yellow in autumn before falling. A fantastic, vigorous tree!

Soil: Any fertile soil. Pterocarya fraxinifolia is particularly fond of damp or wet soils.

Notes: If you slice down the middle of young twigs, you will find curious chambered pith, common to all Pterocarya species. Pterocarya fraxinifolia have vigorous root systems and should not be planted close to drains or house foundations.

Description

Pterocarya fraxinifolia (Caucasian wingnut). This is a large tree which will grow about 30m tall. The flowers are produced in long pendulous, greenish-golden catkins, they are followed by ribbons of winged fruit.

Cultivation

They are very frost-hardy trees which prefer full sun with fertile, deep moist but well-drained soil.
