Pterostyrax hispida

This grower is sure of this plant identification.

A native of Japan and China brought to the UK in 1875, Pterostyrax hispida has spectacular panicles of fragrant, white flowers (up to 25 cm long) resembling epaulettes in early to mid summer, with bright green leaves like those of a Halesia (Snowdrop tree). These turn a pleasing yellow in autumn before falling.

A slender, beautiful small tree, perfect as a standalone or in a woodland border.

Pterostyrax hispida (Epaulette tree). This species will grow to about 15m. The leaves are rich green, and oval with a wedge-shaped base and downy undersides. In the summer it will produce displays of fragrant white flowers in drooping sprays.
