A vigorous oak native to Iran and S. Russia, Quercus castaneifolia 'Green Spire' has deep green, sweet chestnut-like leaves which turn bronze in autumn. It also has interesting, prickly acorns up to 2-3 cm across, even on quite young plants.

An oak with a columnar habit that becomes a handsome large, upright tree.

Description

Quercus castaneifolia ‘Green Spire’ (Chestnut-leaved Oak). This oak has narrow, oval, shiny and toothed leaves similar to the Sweet Chestnut. The leaves turn bronze in autumn and the acorns have prickly bases, again, much like the outer casings of sweet chestnuts.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy, and grow in sun or semi-shade in deep, well drained soil.

Interest and use

Grown for foliage and fruit interest. A large tree, often used in parks and open spaces.
