Swamp Chestnut Oak, Basket Oak, Cow Oak

Description

Quercus michauxii (Swamp Chestnut Oak). The leaves of this oak are toothed rather than lobed (similar to the chestnut oak), shiny green on the top and greyish-green underneath and turn deep crimson in the autumn. The acorns are sweet and can be eaten directly off the tree (unlike most acorns, which need soaking to remove the tannins).

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy, and grow in sun or semi-shade in deep, well drained soil.

Interest and use

Grown for their autumn foliage and nuts.
