A vigorous tree native to North America and Canada, Quercus rubra has toothed, green leaves which appear as though they are on fire in autumn, turning lovely shades of dark red and orange before falling.

Quercus rubra grows to be a majestic, large garden tree and gives its best display of autumn colour in a slightly acid soil

Grower Notes

Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. The autumn colour of Quercus rubra is somewhat dependant upon the soil pH and the foliage will produce a better, stronger autumn colour in more acidic soils.
Hardiness: Hardy.
Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
Habit: Quercus rubra grows to be a large tree with a branching rounded crown.
Height: 25 m (82 ft)
Spread: 20 m (65 ft)

Notes: Quercus rubra is more tolerant of atmospheric pollution than many other species of Oak. This Oak is also known as Quercus borealis.

Description

Quercus rubra (Red oak). This is a deciduous tree which reaches around 30m producing shiny grey bark. The leaves are dark green and pointed with lobes. The young spring and autumn leaves are red. They will need fertile soil with plenty of water. Native to eastern USA and Canada.

Cultivation

They will thrive in deep, damp, well-drained soil. Some of the species like full sun, while others prefer partial-shade.
