This grower is sure of this plant identification.

Native to parts of China, Japan and Korea, Rubus coreanus is a stunning plant with prickly, silver stems in summer which turn vibrant mahogany brown/red in winter. The older stems stay the lovely dark colour in the following years.

Clusters of flowers in early summer are followed by edible yet small, dark red or purplish black fruit in late summer or early autumn.

Habit: Rubus coreanus grows to be a medium sized densely branching shrub if left un-pruned.

Pruning: Rubus coreanus produces a number of new stems each year from the perennial rootstock, these stems fruit in their second year and then die and can be pruned out.

Description

Rubus coreanus (Korean Black Raspberry). Native to Korea, where it is used to make bokbunja ju; a fruit wine and believed to have aphrodisiac qualities! Silver stems in summer turn red-brown in winter over dark green leaves.

Cultivation

Prune out the dead stems which have produced fruit that year.

Interest and use

Grown for their foliage, fruits and flowers or ornamental, often prickly stems. Deciduous species may be grown for their winter stems Suitable for coastal conditions.
