Native to the Alps, Salix helvetica is a dwarf willow with a compact rounded habit, lovely silvery leaves and greyish-white catkins in early spring. A very hardy plant, this small shrub is an excellent choice for a rockery or scree garden.

Description

Salix helvetica (Swiss willow). This is a dense shrub with a soft grey down on the younger stems. The foliage is narrow and bright silver which becomes grey-green on top but will remain white underneath.

Cultivation

They will require cool, moist soil with sun or partial-shade. These frost-hardy plants do best in areas with clearly defined seasons. Propagate from seed, cuttings in summer, or by layering. Prone to attack by caterpillars, aphids and gall mites and canker-causing fungal diseases.

Interest and use

Grown for their habit, foliage, catkins and, in some cases, colourful winter shoots. Suitable for coastal conditions. Attracts butterflies
