Rare in the UK, Sassafras albidum is a small tree with variable leaves, usually with conspicuous lobes and stunning autumn colour. Pale green through spring/summer, they turn vivid shades of orange, red or yellow in autumn before falling.

This tree prefers a moist, well drained soil and a position sheltered from the wind.
An excellent choice of tree for year-round foliage interest.

Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
Soil: Well drained, moist soils.
Hardiness: Hardy but Sassafras albidum can be fickle and requires protection from late spring frost when young.
Rate of Growth: Moderate.
Habit: Sassafras albidum grows to be a small or eventually medium sized tree, pyramidal when young and generally rounded once mature.

Description

Sassafras albidum (Ague tree). This is a beautiful hardwood tree. The leaves have a pleasant aromatic smell. The bark of the roots can be used to make tea. It will produce attractive, bluish berries on long bright red fruit stalks. The autumn colour is a brilliant red to yellow.

Cultivation

You will need to plant in deep, fertile, well-drained, acidic soil in full sun or light shade. Propagation is from seeds or suckers in autumn or from root cuttings in winter.
