An exciting new introduction, Syringa pekinensis 'China Snow' is a small tree with masses of fragrant white flowers in early summer and peeling, amber-brown bark once established. Leaves are an attractive dark green, with yellow or bronze autumn colour.

A little slow growing initially, this tree is tolerant of dry soils and ideal for small gardens, flowering best in a sunny position.

Position: Full sun.
Soil: Moist or well drained soil. Syringa pekinensis 'China Snow' is drought tolerant.
Hardiness: Reasonably hardy.
Flowering Period: May - June

Description

Syringa reticulata subsp. pekinensis ‘China Snow’ (Peking lilac). Formerly known as Syringa pekinensis, this tree has long panicles of highly scented cream-white flowers and flaking reddish brown bark. Foliage is dark green, turning brown-yellow in autumn.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy and will need full sun with deep fertile, well drained, preferably alkaline soil in sun or light shade.

Interest and use

Grown for its scented, showy flowers and arching form.
