A popular and reliable lilac, Syringa vulgaris 'Souvenir de Louis Spaeth' has panicles of vivid purple-pink coloured flowers in early summer. The leaves are bright green turning yellow/bronze before falling in autumn. A large shrub or eventually very small garden tree with good late spring/early summer colour, ideal for planting in a sunny border.

Description

Syringa vulgaris ‘Souvenir de Louis Spaeth’ (Common lilac). This species produces fragrant, beautiful flowers with a large spreading habit. The leaves are heart-shaped, oval and pointed, and are about 10cm long. The flowers are in dense pyramidal heads, and are white or pale purple.

Cultivation

They will grow in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in sun or light shade. Watch out, it is suckering. You should prune moderately every other year if needed and remove old wood and any suckers that appear near the base of the plant. Grow in full sun as this will help the species to produce the most flowers.
